Aquaponics and Hydroponics are two great ways to start your own food machine! Weather you have a large outdoor space, a greenhouse, a backyard or even a table top there is a system for any space. The yield will be greater the larger the system is but small systems are great for keeping live herbs!
The first step is to decide what system is best for you and your space.
Aquaponics - Using a closed system of water to convert fish waste to fertilizer and grow food. This system allows you to harvest fish for meat or you can substitute regular goldfish if you don't want a meat crop. The disadvantage to this system is it requires more space an more equipment than a hydroponic system.
Hydroponics - Using a closed system of water in conjunction with liquid fertilizer to grow food. This system is better for people who have less space and don't want the added worry of keeping fish.

The next step is deciding how large of a system you can have. The bigger your system the more food you can grow. If you have a small space outside you can grow enough food for 1 -2 people. If you have a greenhouse you can grow enough food for a small family.
Build or buy your system
Building your own system is a little daunting but it is the cheapest way to start growing your own food. Also if you build your own system you can tailor it to your space. Systems can be built out of PVC piping, plastic tanks and a few fountain pumps. If building your own system sounds too scary there are plenty of places online you can buy a pre-built system.
Here are some examples of working systems:
